Team Smelp win the top prize at the German competition held in Frankfurt, Germany.
Building upon the growing ubiquity of the Internet of Things, Cisco launched The Switch-Up Challenge in partnership with TARGETrecruit. This competition invites technological innovation from university students, requiring them to devise an innovative mechanism that can tackle a social or environmental issue by using the Internet of Things. The prize is a week-long trip to Cisco’s global headquarters in San Jose, California.
Cisco’s German competition came to a close earlier this month, with six dedicated teams travelling to Frankfurt to present their innovative ideas to a panel of judges. The grand final certainly impressed – Detlev Kuehne, Senior Manager at Cisco said: ‘The SwitchUp Challenge was truly inspiring. I was deeply impressed by the quality of each pitch, personal dedication and commitment each team has shown. Unfortunately we could only select one winner. For me all six teams were champions!’
Despite the excellent effort demonstrated by all six teams, there was only one winner: Smelp. This team of four managed to impress the judges with their innovative smart solution for in-town security. Smelp is a network of smart items which are inexpensively attached to street lanterns in the public area which continuously deliver essential data to a central web platform whilst emergency calls are issued automatically using speech recognition. With Smelp, the police and security companies are able to recognise and prevent dangerous situations early on. Victims of crime can be supported faster, making cities and our lives in them more satisfying and safe.
This drive to ensure safety in towns and cities comes from the four bright students behind Smelp - Tobias Grözinger, Tobias Hofmann, Malou Ockenfels and Daniel Sokolowski. All studying a Masters at TU Darmstadt, the team have a clear passion for Computer Science and the impact of the Internet of Things on our daily lives. ‘It is a great honor to be part of a time, where we all start to think about improvements in our daily life by using those smart technologies’ said Daniel Sokolowski.
