Students across the UK compete to be recognised as the most career-minded school leaver
Monday, February 8, 2016

On the 14th March, London’s iconic BT Tower will host some exceptionally driven teenagers, as the gauntlet is thrown-down to identify the best and brightest school leaver from around the country.

They will be competing in the Grand Final of the TARGETcareers School Leavers' Challenge - a regional and nationwide championship, headline partnered by BT, and supported by leading talent assessment experts Capp.

In this grand tournament of work-strengths, thousands of 16 – 19 year-old students are currently benchmarking their abilities against peers via online regional leader boards. Radically different from any other careers event, the competition comprises of ten regional online heats, with each area sponsored by a leading school leaver employer such as Aviva, Bank of England, Capgemini, CGI, Cognizant, Gazprom Energy, Laing O'Rourke and Skanska.

In the Grand Final, the top ten scoring students from each heat will be invited to the BT Tower to compete in group exercises for prizes and awards, get the opportunity to network with employers, and receive expert careers advice. First place will also win the grand prize - a unique day’s experience with BT at their state-of- the-art Global Research & Development Headquarters.

All students entering the competition must complete Capp’s two-step, leading strengths-based candidate assessments: the Work Readiness Assessment and the Apprentice Situational Strengths Test in order to be ranked on their region’s leader board.  As an added bonus, each entrant will receive a feedback report on work readiness and suggestions for strengths-based self-development.

“At BT we’re extremely passionate about investing in talent”, said Laura Haynes, BT Head of Talent Programme Recruitment.

“Every year we recruit hundreds of graduates, interns and apprentices across our diverse business areas and locations. The school leaver’s market is extremely exciting right now; we’re pleased to see there is such a wealth of choice and opportunity available after finishing school or college. We’re proud to headline sponsor this competition as we firmly believe in supporting individuals to realise their potential and pursue a career they will love.”

Kirsty Drummond, TARGETjobs Events Account Director, commented:

“TARGETjobs Events is proud to bring this competition to hundreds of students across the UK and to give them the chance to spend the day at the BT Tower! We’re delighted to be supported by BT and the many other apprenticeship employers that recognise the huge potential for school leavers who have the right work ethic and drive. There are now so many excellent professional career paths on offer to school leavers, we’re pleased to be able to showcase some of these to students and to help them make informed choices about their future careers.”

Entries to the regional heats close on Friday 26th February 2016.
