The summer survival guide

We know that many students often put off thinking about a career until after exams and well into the summer, so we’ve put together a package of advice that deals with some of the most common queries about what’s next. Feel free to share these features with students and over social media if you think they’ll be of interest.

I have a degree – now what?
Help! I'm struggling to find a job after graduation. What do I do?
Can I still get work experience after graduating?
I’ve got a 2.2. Can I still get a graduate job?
I want to get away. What are my gap year options… and how do I pay for them?
Which part-time jobs will boost my graduate career the most?
How do I find my own work experience opportunities late in summer?

Student mental health: continuing to raise awareness

Last month saw a focus on mental health through Mental Health Awareness Week (13–19 May). Here at TARGETjobs we want to keep the momentum going because awareness and the maintenance of good mental health shouldn’t be confined to one week per year. So in our feature 'Student mental health: where to find help’ we've compiled a list of organisations and key symptoms to watch for related to depression and anxiety, along with links to relevant information from the NHS.

Your students told us how they want to receive careers guidance!

Thank you to all of the careers services who participated in this year’s Trendence Graduate Study. With your continued support, we were able to achieve almost 75,000 responses this year! We have gathered student thoughts on their post-graduation plans and their experience of the careers service. If you are one of our university partners and helped to distribute the survey, we will be sharing this insight with you starting from June!

New tool for TARGETjobs – coming autumn 2019

TARGETjobs will soon be launching a new tool aimed at providing students with a clear understanding of their cognitive abilities in three of the main psychometric tests used by graduate recruiters – numerical, verbal and inductive reasoning. Uniquely, this tool will allow students to compare and rank their scores against their peers rather than giving a single score of their own ability, providing them with a more realistic view of who they are competing against for jobs by sector and location, as well as education. For universities, this will allow for more informed conversations between students and careers advisers and help improve graduate outcomes. We will be revealing more over the coming months, so stay tuned!

TARGETconnect Steering Group

The month of May saw the University of London’s Careers Group host the TARGETconnect Steering Group meeting. This influential group of sixteen universities who are driving innovation in graduate outcomes and use of the TARGETconnect meets regularly to shape platform development and prioritise new features to improve student engagement.

Our discussions ranged from the detail of the product, to changes in how employers are recruiting, to the new services GTI will bring to the market over the coming months – all designed to help students develop their employability skills. Our work is progressing quickly and TARGETconnect will very soon feature a new workflow engine designed to guide students along a prescribed path to employability. Also, TARGETjobs and TARGETconnect will be coming closer together to deliver exciting careers tools that deliver real and actionable help to students, especially through the ‘decide’ stage of career planning.

Thank you from TARGETjobs events

We just wanted to say a huge thank you for your involvement with TARGETjobs events this year. This academic year, the team have delivered more than 25 bespoke events and awards with almost 10,000 applications and 2,500 attendees from over 130 higher education institutions. This success would not be possible without the help and support we receive from university careers services and departments, so thank you very much!

We are already very much underway with our first event of the 2019/20 series; BAME City Law which took place earlier this month with some of the leading City law firms in London. The rest of the 2019/20 events series will go live in August and we will be in touch with you over the next couple of weeks to discuss how best to promote these opportunities over the summer, but in the meantime please visit targetjobs.co.uk/events for more information.
