Purpose of the job

  • To develop and support the online website products of the business using the latest technology and methodologies

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Develop applications or sites according to the specification and timeframes provided
  • The support and maintenance of new and existing sites
  • Provide design and technical support documentation
  • Providing advice and technical expertise to the business in relation to developments

Key Objectives

  • To develop requirements according to best practice and accepted methodologies
  • To make technical recommendations about the best way to implement a particular piece of functionality
  • To implement software designs and associated unit tests
  • To communicate effectively with team members about the functionality introduced and interaction with existing functionality
  • To build key relationships with editorial, sales and design
  • To use relevant cutting edge technology to improve the internal and external user experience of the site, whether through additional functionality or simplifying existing functional elements

Person specification

  • 2 years development experience in a commercial environment ­ essential
  • Experience developing in Microsoft .NET technologies, in particular ASP.NET and VB.NET ­ essential
  • Knowledge of database design and construction of SQL queries ­ essential
  • Experience working with either SQL Server 2005 or MySQL databases ­ essential
  • Experience working in a online publishing environment - desirable
  • Knowledge of other programming languages such as javascript ­ desirable
  • Knowledge of SourceSafe - desirable
  • Any knowledge of LAMP technologies a definite advantage
  • Experience of Content Management Systems would be an advantage
