International Law firm Allen & Overy win ‘Graduate employer of the year’ at the TARGETjobs Awards, in addition to winning ‘Most popular graduate recruiter in law’, ‘Best innovation in student recruitment’ and ‘Best work experience programme’. Newcastle University took home the new award for ‘Best university employability strategy’.

The Grosvenor House on Park Lane, London was host last night to the thirteenth annual TARGETjobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards, the largest early talent recruitment event in the UK.

This year’s ceremony was presented by Julian Clary and attended by over 1,000 guests from the world of early talent recruitment.

The TARGETjobs Awards is unique in that nearly all nominations are based solely on the votes of the UK student population. Sector award shortlists are determined through a national survey of 62,814 students and recent graduates from 120 different universities, conducted by trendence UK. Similarly, Student Panel awards, which include categories such as ‘Best diversity strategy’ and ‘Best use of social media’, are shortlisted based on the careful deliberation of a select student judging panel at The Guardian head office in London.

The big winner on the night was Allen & Overy, who not only took home the prestigious award for ‘Graduate employer of the year’, but also collected trophies for ‘Most popular graduate recruiter in law’, ‘Best innovation in student recruitment’ and ‘Best work experience programme’.

Comments from the student judging panel were:

"Allen & Overy have a most thorough approach to a personalised candidate experience; this follows right through to their exit strategy and rehires of alumni. They were honest about challenges, career prospects but clear in commitment to development wherever the career may go."

In order to better recognise the hard work of university careers and employability offices, the TARGETjobs Awards launched a new award for ‘Best university employability strategy’ this year. Newcastle University picked-up the trophy, beating runners-up University of Manchester and The University of South Wales, who came in second and third respectively. Comments from the student panel included:

‘Newcastle have a very clear approach to employability that stretches across the institution with very clear support and drive from university management. The university has introduced a policy to increase placements across all courses recognising the importance of work experience to employers. Employability runs throughout the entire university experience for students.’
